MOTHER: This piece is a collaborative creation with my mom, an artist with over fifty years of experience in jewelry inspired by her travels. I have watched my mom as an artist my entire life, she used to let me play with her scrap metal, put tools in my hand and showed me how to play. Her invitation to make this piece brought me back to that time, the invitation to create, to become an artist in my own way.
This year, all the women in my family traveled to France - my mom, my sister, my niece, myself and my daughter. My mom was constantly stopping to take pictures of the different balconies or architecture that inspired her. I thought she just liked the charm or the artistry, I didn’t realize they were inspiration for her next collection. She designed a pair of earrings based on a metal screen we saw together in Paris. And as she prepared her booth for the Sawdust Festival, she asked me to create a metal installation inspired by her earrings—a true full circle moment. Metal screen, earring, metal window. Mother, daughter, mother.
