ABALONE: I inherited a deep love of the ocean, probably first by my grandmother and then reinforced by my parents, which I in-turn am handing down to my children. My grandmother lived on the Wedge in Newport Beach, when we would visit her, she would hand us little ziplock baggies and we would scavenge the beach looking for sea glass and shells. It set me on a life long path of searching for the magical in the mundane. Now that I have my own children, we also go out scavenging for our own treasures. Abalones are our favorite. We started free diving together and searching for abalone off our coast. You can see this other worldly light glimmer from the bottom of the ocean as the sun catches the abalone shell, then it’s a race to see who can descend the quickest to claim their ocean prize. This minimalist piece is meant to feature the abalone as the pinnacle of the search.
