It has been a while since I have been so internally disrupted. I met with Erin to do my own Enneagram typing interview and it changed everything for me. This internal shift has lead me to think about growth and change and permission and evolution. Sometimes I feel bad when I sense that change is coming, now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE change, I also know it has consequence and that is where I get hung up. I am wrestling with myself right now and working on moving towards a greater understanding of what it means to be my authentic self. The Enneagram has given me awareness (albeit painful) and resources to consider change in new ways.
The Enneagram in the most user friendly way of understanding is basically a spiritual growth tool that asks why we do what we do. It is a little about personality, but personality is only one part of it. Personality is the “masks and behaviors”. The enneagram is the why behind the behavior.
What is the enneagram not?
It is not a personality tool and it is not a way to put us in a box. Most other inventories or tools tend to box people in and can become almost a prescription. The Enneagram is not the way into a box, it is the way out.
Erin talks for a bit about the history of the Enneagram. This tool has been around for a while and our understanding of it has evolved over time. We are continuously learning new things.
Before my typing interview with Erin, I thought I was a 2. That was my understanding of myself. After our interview, Erin suggested I think about the idea that I may not be a 2, but a 4, and a 4 with a relational instinct and 5 wing. (friendly reminder to google the Enneagram if you are totally lost right now). My fourness totally makes sense. This shook me! I feel like I am starting over getting to know myself, but in the best way possible. This is why we talk about how it is so valuable to speak to a real live trained human about the Enneagram rather than only taking the online tests and automatically assuming that is your number. It is the equivalent of reading self help books vs. seeing a therapist. Seeing an Enneagram coach really does change things.
We also talk about the law of one and the law of three. In the law of one, we understand how we are all connected. None of us are separated from the rest. That is why we can connect with all of the numbers on the Enneagram and that can absolutely make sense. The law of three breaks up the image of the Enneagram into the three distinct forces that when used together, make a change.
The Enneagram really is a beautiful tool to unlocking the why behind our behaviors. It can be useful in our relationships, our professional setting, and really in everyday life.
